Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a designated Important Bird Area for Missouri and primary wintering area for Canada geese, is less than 20 miles from Brunswick and two miles south of Sumner.

The US Fish & Wildlife Service manages the 10,795-acre refuge for migratory waterfowl – with over 240 avian species observed residing on or passing through – and provides a natural habitat for neo-tropical migrating bird species.

Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt through Executive Order 7563. Thereafter, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service purchased the land, and the Civilian Conservation Corps created the wetlands and initiated the refuge farming program.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service maintains up-to-date information about Swan Lake and its wildlife and habitat.
