Brunswick boasts an advantageous location 3 miles upstream from the confluence of the lower Grand River and the Missouri River in Chariton County, Missouri. In addition to an excellent habitat for fish and fowl, the uncrowded Grand River offers an unspoiled weekend of paddling and camping in nature.
For an active yet relaxing get-away, paddlers can launch their kayaks and canoes at public accesses to the lower Grand River with Level 1 difficulty between the historic river towns of Chillicothe to Sumner, Bosworth to Brunswick.
In Brunswick, paddlers can camp, fish, birdwatch and observe wildlife from the bank of the Grand River at Lewis and Clark’s Official June 13, 1804 Campsite. In the vicinity as well, though obliterated centuries ago by floods, is the former site of Fort d’Orleans (Fort Orleans), built by French explorer Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont in 1723 on La Grande Riviére.
Starting in Iowa, the Grand River flows 226 miles to its mouth, its watershed of 7900 square miles the largest in northern Missouri to serve the Missouri River.
